Ask Joe

Q.  I am a big fan of the show but some of the kids at school say that it’s fake.  Do you fake anything on the show?
Riley, Victoria BC

A.  No way, Riley!  As I say in each episode, everything you see is real. We don't mess with the audio or the video, it's all real. Even my jacket is real leather. That being said, there were a very few certain moments when trackers thought they heard or saw something ghostly that turned out to be part of a museum display or an animal or something.  But we also mention those times on the show when they happen and trust me every time I look freaked out, I really am.

Q. I think Ghost Trackers rocks!  I want to know the scariest thing you’ve ever seen while making the show?
Kelly, Thunder Bay, ON

A.  Watching Freaky Findings for the first time was actually a very scary experience, having been right there and not noticing some of those shadows and spirits.  Aside from that the thing that sticks out the most for me from this season is definitely Kenta in Custom House.  It was the third last show and I won't give too much away because it hasn't aired yet.  Let's just say we both heard something very, very scary while he was in the elevator.

Q. .  I watch Ghost Trackers all the time and think you are the coolest host on TV.  Do you ever get scared when you're making the show?
Darryl, Truro, NS

A.  All the time!  Every time I look scared, I actually am. Being in constant contact with the Tracker inside, seeing and hearing everything they do makes me feel like I'm right there in the house with them.

Q.  . I love your show and want to do some ghost tracking of my own. How can I learn to be a ghost tracker?
Carlie, Woodstock, ON

A.  Ghost Tracking is definitely an intuitive job. That means you need to really be open and able to sense different feelings. Although it's important to get to know your equipment (parabolic microphone, EMF detector, etc.) sometimes the most important tool you have is your instincts. Remember spirits don't normally show themselves visually or even with sound, but that doesn't mean they aren't there. Feeling a presence and sensing what they are trying to tell us is sometimes the best evidence you can get. So sharpen up your awareness skills and then spend some time working through the Ghost Tracker training game on the website and you'll be ready in no time.

Q. I.  Love the show, Joe.  Just curious: how did you become interested in ghost tracking?
Darrius, Montreal, PQ

A.  .  I've always been curious about "the other side" and if ghosts really exist or not, ever since I first saw the movie Ghost Busters.  I didn't necessarily think "busting" the ghosts was the way to go in real life, but it did make the idea of looking for them seem really cool.

Q. I am ten-years-old and think your show is the freakiest thing on television. How can I be on the show?
Michelle, Calgary AB

A.  Everyone has their own theory on this and this is mine: I think when people die in a state of turmoil or unrest, be it tragic or unexpected, a part of them stays here and either replays certain aspects of their life over and over, or tries to contact us for a specific reason. I also believe that the majority of spirits are not out to get us in anyway and shouldn't be feared. Like Slimer. How could anyone hate him. Look at him. All green and...slimey.

Q. We live in a very old house and I’m pretty sure somebody died in it at some point. I think my house is haunted. What should I do?
Jenna, London, ON

A. Get...Out. Just kidding. The best thing to do is try to talk to the spirit. Remember they don't want to hurt you. Maybe try asking it what it wants. If you get scared then try to explain that to the spirit. Say, "I know you mean no harm but you freak me out sometimes.  You can stay if you want, but no more creeping me out." You'd be surprised what a little talking can do.
